Floats like a kite...This would be about the best way possible I know how to describe what this sleek aircraft flies like. It has a long, slender wing, and plenty of lift. This is definitely something you would want to take to the field on a less windy day where winds are calm to none. I personally like flying on these days anyway and this particular aircraft in those conditions makes flying smooth as silk look like child's play. |
One great aspect the Corvalis possesses is its wide speed envelope. Drop in some flaps and it slows down nearly to a crawl with anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. Bring up the flaps and open the throttle and you move from docile stalls to sporty speeds. I will say this, asking this plane to come down out of the skies on final approach is like telling a kid it's time to leave the toy store. This bird was built fly and she does it quite well. Its long and slender wings and light wing loading almost give it sailplane like characteristics. You will just about have to force this plane down to the ground. Coordinated turns are a breeze as little or no rudder is required, making it easy to navigate around the field. Gentle stall characteristics make this plane comfortable and predictable, allowing for almost hands free straight and level.
Assembly of this model is a cinch. The horizontal stabilizer halves slide and lock into place held on by a single screw for each side hidden underneath. The rudder and vertical fin are molded as one piece as part of the fuselage, so there is no worry about trying to line it up with the plane and making sure it's perpendicular to the horizontal stab. The wing halves slide onto a plastic wing joiner and then are tightened down with two screws on either side. I'm not a big fan of this because there is nothing keeping the wings locked together so they can't rotate around the spar until you bolt it into place. Be careful to align the push rods for |
the flaps and ailerons with their respective servos so they can be connected. The nose wheel has a functional spring in it which adds a scale touch. The wheels themselves are held in by screwing the two halves of the wheel pants together. There is nothing on the axle to keep the wheels from sliding over and rubbing the inside of the wheel skirts, which I'm not a big fan of. I have yet to find a solution, but I also have not seen any problems just yet. Be sure to keep an eye on the wear and tear of the foam wheels.
The scale appearance of this plane is what really gets me. It lacks almost nothing in detail for being a foam model. The colors are nice and I do appreciate the trim scheme. Although it's not totally scale, it fits very nicely with the multiple compound curves. As always, Flyzone with their select scale series has included a scale cockpit with a detail dashboard, though the tinted windows make it hard to see inside. With the pre-installed hinges, the fowler flaps add a scale like appearance unraveled by most other models. Night flying is a breeze with its vibrant LED lights. As a final touch Flyzone has added a chrome spinner. Construction of this model is complete with carbon fiber reinforcement making for solid wing construction. Also the hatch on top of the nose cowling make it easy to access your battery.
As a TxR model this plane comes with a Tactic TR624 SLT receiver that can be bound to your favorite Tactic transmitter. You can also use the AnyLink model allowing you to use your favorite transmitter of almost any brand. I personally prefer to use the Tactic TTX650. This radio has excellent functionality and a wide range of programming with a 20 model memory. With a 30A ESC and 1350 Kv brushless motor this plane can power through almost any rate of climb. Although the battery is small, with only a 3s 1800mah, the Corvalis gets ample flight time. Unlike the DeHavilland Beaver, the Corvalis only has one servo each for the flaps and ailerons in the center of the wing.
Over all, the Flyzone Cessna 350 Corvalis, in my opinion, is a great purchase for the money you will spend. It boasts great looks and beautiful curves and is easy to set up. Its docile flight characteristics make it a pleasantly flying model that is easy on your thumbs. With the secure link technology and preinstalled gear, such as servos and motor, make getting in the air simple.
